Think Kenya and think safari. The open plains of the Masai Mara dotted with single baobab trees and huge herds of animals offer the quintessential safari experience, while the annual migration from the Serengeti during August, September and October will dazzle, delight and exhilerate. Lazy days in little fishing villages on Lake Victoria are the perfect compliment to all that action, and Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline, rich in Swahili culture, has some simply stunning beaches.
The Great Rift Valley & Lake Victoria
About 20 million years ago, the Great Rift Valley was formed and we’re happy it was. Today it’s full of green valleys, lakes home to hippo and flamingo and on a plateau, beautiful Lake Victoria, with some of the most stunning sunsets we’ve ever seen.
Masai Mara
This most famous of safari destinations needs no introduction: wildlife viewing here is second to none. See thousands of herd animals and their predators living side by side with the Masai people.
Samburu & Shaba
Elephant fan? Then head to the Samburu Reserve, where large herds roam completely at ease with safari vehicles. This area is also culturally very rich with ancient tribes maintaining their centuries-old way of life.
Amboseli
This small national park offers fabulous views of Kilimanjaro and it’s snowy peak. Plenty of wildlife year-round and some camps have swimming pools, making this a great family option.
Meru
With only two lodges in the entire park, this is a wildlife experience you can have practically to yourself. The Big Five roam here as well as lots of bird species so is great for birdwatchers.
Laikipia
Much of the Laikipia area is made up of privately owned ranches on vast estates and is as much a wildlife experience as a chance to see life in the bush on a working cattle ranch. As well as exciting game drives, you can walk, camel and horse ride as well as visit nearby villages. Action-packed.
The Coast
Think icing-sugar sand, gently swaying palm trees, fishing villages and vibrant Swahili culture. Whether it’s a hideaway on the mainland or escaping it all on an island, Kenya has some wonderful coastal retreats, and fantastic diving just about everywhere.
